Spanish version of "Community-based landslide risk reduction. Managing disasters in small steps

The wait is finally over! After a long process, we can now proudly present the Spanish translation of the book “Reducción del riesgo de deslizamientos de acuerdo con la comunidad. Gestión de desastres en pequeños pasos” (from the English version handbook Community-based landslide risk reduction. Managing disasters in small steps).

The handbook is a compilation of the experience implementing the MoSSaiC methodology (Management of Slope Stability in Communities) in several vulnerable communities in the Caribbean and the results obtained in disaster risk reduction. It describes the steps to follow for a successful community-based approach including:

  1. Framework for understanding and managing landslide disaster risk in vulnerable communities;

  2. Selecting communities, champions, and advocacy groups for a proactive approach in tackling landslide risk in communities;

  3. Identifying required data;

  4. Design and implementation; and

  5. Project supervision and evaluation.

The fundamentals of the MoSSaiC approach are that it considers the at-risk community not only as the beneficiaries of the project but as the people with the best practical knowledge of the slopes in their area. Therefore, they are involved in the risk identification, the project implementation, and the results evaluation. By engaging and working with communities to find and deliver solutions to landslide risk, governments will develop new practices and policies.

Please, feel free to share it and pass it along to your Spanish Speaking contacts.
